Ian and Larissa - a few years later

It has been a couple of years since the video appeared on John Piper's blog Desiring God about Ian and Larissa. To those of you who don't know what it is about, I have embedded the original video on this page so that you could enjoy.

Ever since I knew about these sacrificial couple, my heart melted for them and for over an year I had followed them on their blog on their journey praying for Ian Murphy to get well and watching how his beautiful wife Larissa partners with him. It was their story that made me even recommend the book ( This momentary marriage available as free pdf) which by the way is brilliantly written by Dr. John Piper.

So, recently this couple have been making news again and here is why. We love them and love what God is doing through them. Ian has come a long way in recovery and could make brilliant steps. It's his love for his bride that made her get through the hard work she did to his recovery. In Larissa's words    . . " Our hope is that we have also watched all of these [ happy and painful events ] alongside Jesus, who is our own man of sorrows, acquainted with grief (Isaiah 53:3So we have not walked it alone."

My take on the whole matter follows like this, there are days that your worst nightmares come to reality, but that does not stop God from loving you nor takes away his care for you. So, then we are people should try to rely on God to enable us to do that - because God is faithful.

Recently, they been busy and have written a new book. It's called Eight Twenty Eight. The name comes from their anniversary and their dad's birthday - 28th of August. I am hoping to get to read their book soon. Once I get it, I would create a new post as a book review.

If you have not been reading their blog and you are single , I urge you to read it became you would get a brilliant perspective on covenant relationship.

If you are married or courting someone,  I urge you to read it with your partner. It would help your hearts grow closer and bring in a joy that in C. S. Lewis' words would make you serious.

My understanding of marriage has been shaped by their love. I know few couples at this very moment who are looking to sign their divorce papers and it is a sad thing. Some cases sadly are for genuine relationship trust where one party has had many extramarital affairs , some even more, sadly just because the husband and wife fail to talk and suffer pain together.

Ian and Larissa show us a couple like some of us, were high school sweet hearts and in an accident - all was lost. Larissa did not have to choose Ian,  but for her Christ and his word made sense. She found that love as in 1st Corinthians 13 meaningful and pursued it. Ian although not able to play the role of a husband who brings home food and supplies live out his life, In a way that Larissa knows she married the right guy. Larissa says in many of her posts that Ian was the best person she could ever marry because he cared to invest a lot in her. I look forward to seeing Ian get much better soon and women learn to follow Larissa's example. God bless you both.

Here is a video on their book update. And for those hoping to get to follow them here are some social links.

The Nativity - by Gari Melchers

This could be my first ever critique of art that I have ever written and that is because it is only recently art has captured my interest as much as this work. This write up is made both in English and German as I want to practice my German.  'The Nativity' by Gari Melchers.  I am not an art expert and my critique is from a layman's point of view, but bear with me. I have tried reading some information about the art and the culture behind it and I have my two favourite blog posts about the same work and yes,  I have shamelessly copied some of their thoughts. Woebegone but Hopeful and other is by Lisa VO . Julius Garibaldi Melchers (August 11, 1860 – November 30, 1932) was an American artist. He was one of the leading American proponents of naturalism. He won a 1932 Gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.[1] - Wikipedia The Nativity is painted during the peak of realism movement - in a gritty and less idealised manner . For m

2 Kings 5 | Part 2 | Naaman and the Offense of the cross

This section of the story in 2 Kings chapter 5 focuses on Naaman. We know that Naaman was the commander in chief of the armies of Syria and possibly the right hand man as he was incharge of strategic, political and warfare and security. This was a very prestigious role that Naaman had earned. Some Jewish Rabbis say that his ruthlessness and his power resulted in God punishing Naaman with Tzaraat which is translated as Leprosy. For the sake of these notes, I would consider the word Leprosy.  Naaman was powerful and wise. In fact, it was God who had blessed him from the start. The verse says that Naaman was a powerful and influential man valued by the king greatly. His victory was a gift from God to Aram. Why would God bless a foreign nation to attack the Israelites? In Deuteronomy chapter 28, Moses tells the people that God would make the enemies of Israel punish the people of God if they are disobedient. Jehoram, the then king of Israel was the son of Ahab. Ahab and his wife Jezebel le

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: Preface: Why are we looking through this book? Unlike the letter of James, this book is written to a Jewish / Gentile Christians who are scattered across various provinces that are outside their ideal world. In the last two weeks we have been looking at what it means to live as people who love God. Today and the weeks to follow, we will look at how this is meant to be worked out as people living among other nations.
