Disciples Make Disciples - Sermon Notes

Key Verses:
  • Matthew 28:19-20
  • Acts 14:21
Background of Acts 14

Paul/ Shaul (Saul ) a sinner is saved by Christ and he sees Grace. He later meets the rest of the believers and the Spirit of Lord tells them to set apart Paul and Barnabas as evangelists. They begin their travel through Asia Minor and reach in chapter 14 Iconoum (Koyna)  in modern day Turkey.

There are significant events in this chapter and we will see through them as we try to understand the nature of disciples and what we are called to be.

This is not a special teaching but rather a way we all look together to the word.

  • First of all we need to define who is a believer
    • We are unable to save ourselves
    • We are not able to meet the righteous requirements
    • Only Christ was able to meet then
    • It is Christ who gave us his righteousness
      • (2 Corinthians 5:21 , Romans 4:5, Philippians 3:9 )
    • We take on his righteousness in faith
    • The next step is to be with a Church (2 Timothy 2:22 -
    • So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart)
Paul and Barnabas went to Jewish Synagogue and they shared the Gospel

  • A disciple shares the gospel

Why? This is the only way man can reach God. Would you not want to share the truth.

God worked among the people and there was conversion.
  • A disciple knows that God will work his way
There were people who were persecuting them.
  • A disciple expects opposition to the gospel
Yet they stayed back preaching the gospel
  • A disciple waits
Lord send his Spirit amongst them and they were able to nurture the people
  • A disciple relies on the power of the Holy Spirit
People saw them as gods .. yet they did not give in
  • A disciple gives God Glory (& are humble -- heb 3:12-13, 10:24-26)
and REPEAT

Who should do it?

2 are better than one .... we do this as a community and brotherhood

How are we to do this.

We start in love :
    We are serious about loving
    We are serious about sin
We are in this for real time -- that means spending time
We are called to trust in God
We are to rely on the Holy Spirit
We are to wait for His timing
We are only to share wisdom we know God is leading us into
We are humble
We realise that this is a two way street
We give and we make sure that we receive. (Remember the parable of the workers who came at different times)
    We are ready to sacrifice
We are ready to hand over those to another persons when God leads us

  • Titus 2:4 — Older women are to train younger women.
  • Second Timothy 2:2 — Paul trained Timothy to train others to train others.
  • Ephesians 6:4 — Fathers are to train their children.
  • Matthew 28:20 — Missionaries are to teach the nations everything Jesus commanded.
  • Hebrews 3:13 — All Christians are to exhort each other every day to avoid sin and to stir each other up to love and good works (see also Hebrews 10:24–25).
  • First Peter 4:10 — All Christians are to use their gifts to serve others.
  • Acts 18:24–26 — Priscilla and Aquila, on the spur of the moment it seems, explained the way of God more accurately to Apollos.

The Nativity - by Gari Melchers

This could be my first ever critique of art that I have ever written and that is because it is only recently art has captured my interest as much as this work. This write up is made both in English and German as I want to practice my German.  'The Nativity' by Gari Melchers.  I am not an art expert and my critique is from a layman's point of view, but bear with me. I have tried reading some information about the art and the culture behind it and I have my two favourite blog posts about the same work and yes,  I have shamelessly copied some of their thoughts. Woebegone but Hopeful and other is by Lisa VO . Julius Garibaldi Melchers (August 11, 1860 – November 30, 1932) was an American artist. He was one of the leading American proponents of naturalism. He won a 1932 Gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.[1] - Wikipedia The Nativity is painted during the peak of realism movement - in a gritty and less idealised ma...

The Ultimate Claim to Glory

During a recent worship service, a thought struck me while singing about giving glory to Jesus. I wondered if it would be appropriate to ask for glory or to claim it for oneself. This idea felt blasphemous, as it seemed to imply that one could steal or exceed God's glory. History is filled with examples of kings and rulers who sought such glory, only to end up as dust and bones. But then I realized that even Jesus, in his prayer to the Father, asked for glory: 'Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed' (John 17:5). How could Jesus, being fully God, ask for glory? The Chalcedonian and Nicene Creeds affirms the answer as said in the verse "He (Jesus), Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage, (Philippians 2:6)". They affirm that Jesus, though fully God, did not cling to his divine equality but humbled himself. He is the only one who truly des...
