I AM Series | Episode 5 | I am the light | John 8:12

Post tenebras lux

After Darkness Light

Portion: John 8:12

Why are we learning this?

To understand the Bible as a whole:

The Bible talks from Genesis to Revelation that God is not unlike any gods that nations believe. He is a God who loves to be with people. He made people in His Image and wants to have communion - relationship - face to face meeting with people

To understand the Trinity:

We have seen what Trinity is: The Father is God, the Son is God and the Spirit is God. They are not ⅓ God - each person is 100% God, and there is only 1 God. The 3 are One.

Jesus is God: Jesus uses the same portion that God used in the story of Israel (I AM) to say that Jesus is the same God

There are almost 300 times the statement is used

Jesus used the Exodus to teach us the kingdom of God

Portions we looked last time (Spiritual Darkness/ Need of Light)

We too walked in darkness

John 1:4, John 8:12, John 3:19-20

Psalm 139: 11,12 - Comfort in darkness + Psalm 18:28

Isaiah 9:2 - People who walked in darkness /Physical darkness, Spiritual Darkness

Luke 11:34-35

Psalm 119:130 - the unfolding of the Word gives light

1 Peter 2:9 - why we are called

Revelation 21:23 - The future

Portions we looked now

Job 17:12: Job says that there is light after darkness - this is the motto of reformation

Psalm 36:9: We see light in his light - its in his light that we see what is true

1 John 1:5: God is light

John 9:4,5: Jesus is Light

John 12:35: Walk in light = Walk in truth

Proverbs 4:18: Walk in truth

John 8:12: Walk in the Light

1 Thessalonians 5:5: We are Children of the light

Habakkuk 2:14: The earth is filled with God’s glory as the seas have water

John 1:9: Tue light came to the world

John 3:20: No one who does evil comes to the light

Acts 26:18: Purpose of the church is to turn people from darkness to the light

How then should we live our lives

We are living a life in exodus, we been saved by the Passover lamb, we are on our journey to the promised land, our walk is through this desert with oppression

So we walk under the guidance of God

God was there in day as cloud

God was there in night as pillar of fire

The people stopped when the cloud / fire stopped

They were guided

God was their light & their path (your Word is a lamp to my feet, light to path)

Exodus 13: 21-22 : The people were guided by the God

It was God who lead them from Egypt (slavery/sin) - it was God who brought them to the land - Your Salvation is God’s project of Love

We walk under the guidance of the Holy Spirit ( Isaiah 30:21)

This is why we are people of the Spirit - We need to be in relationship with Holy Spirit

Exodus 14:24: The people were protected

Psalm 105: 39 : The people were given covering - He watches over you

In night warmth

In day Shade

The Sun may not hurt you, nor the moon (Psalm 121:6,7)

They were shielded from the enemies

There enemies were not able to touch them and they were confused

See Isaiah 59:19 -- When storms come, God changes his standard of protection

Like how fire destroys, so does a Holy fire destroy our sin daily - Only by the baptism of Fire (active living with the Holy Spirit)

The fire shielded them from behind - there is no sin that the devil can accuse you of ( Rom 8:1)

Numbers 14:14: They were people who were different

God was not just a festival thing

God to Israel was a reality, a daily, active person - who they knew

God was there - They knew God was there.

They were led to walk through a raging sea

The Holy Spirit gives us boldness (Acts 4:31, Romans 8:31–32, Philippians 1:19, Ephesians 6:20)

Deuteronomy 1:33: God made his provision

We do not have to seek our wells to drink - God makes us

Psalm 23: 2 : He leads me to fresh water

It is God who gives us our blessings

It is God who gives us our bread

It is God who knows our thirst / hunger ( Matthew 15:32, Matthew 9:36, )

He offers us the free drink (Revelations 22:17, John 7:37,  Isaiah 55:1)

Exodus 40:34-38: They were sealed, people who God moved with constantly

Their lives were ordained by God

We have to walk in step with the Spirit (Gal 5:16)

Our life has to be in the reminder that God walks with us

They stopped when God told them to stop, went when God told them to go.

So should our lives be.

SUMMARY

We walk
  • under the guidance of God
  • with the presence of God (Holy Spirit)

The Nativity - by Gari Melchers

This could be my first ever critique of art that I have ever written and that is because it is only recently art has captured my interest as much as this work. This write up is made both in English and German as I want to practice my German.  'The Nativity' by Gari Melchers.  I am not an art expert and my critique is from a layman's point of view, but bear with me. I have tried reading some information about the art and the culture behind it and I have my two favourite blog posts about the same work and yes,  I have shamelessly copied some of their thoughts. Woebegone but Hopeful and other is by Lisa VO . Julius Garibaldi Melchers (August 11, 1860 – November 30, 1932) was an American artist. He was one of the leading American proponents of naturalism. He won a 1932 Gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.[1] - Wikipedia The Nativity is painted during the peak of realism movement - in a gritty and less idealised manner . For m

2 Kings 5 | Part 2 | Naaman and the Offense of the cross

This section of the story in 2 Kings chapter 5 focuses on Naaman. We know that Naaman was the commander in chief of the armies of Syria and possibly the right hand man as he was incharge of strategic, political and warfare and security. This was a very prestigious role that Naaman had earned. Some Jewish Rabbis say that his ruthlessness and his power resulted in God punishing Naaman with Tzaraat which is translated as Leprosy. For the sake of these notes, I would consider the word Leprosy.  Naaman was powerful and wise. In fact, it was God who had blessed him from the start. The verse says that Naaman was a powerful and influential man valued by the king greatly. His victory was a gift from God to Aram. Why would God bless a foreign nation to attack the Israelites? In Deuteronomy chapter 28, Moses tells the people that God would make the enemies of Israel punish the people of God if they are disobedient. Jehoram, the then king of Israel was the son of Ahab. Ahab and his wife Jezebel le

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: Preface: Why are we looking through this book? Unlike the letter of James, this book is written to a Jewish / Gentile Christians who are scattered across various provinces that are outside their ideal world. In the last two weeks we have been looking at what it means to live as people who love God. Today and the weeks to follow, we will look at how this is meant to be worked out as people living among other nations.
